South Korean author Han Kang (53) has been awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature on October 10, 2024. The Nobel Committee said that her writings show the fragility of human life and the psychological traumas brought about by the historical developments. Anders Olsson, president of the committee, explained that there is also sympathy for the weak, especially women. The first Asian author to win the Nobel Prize in Literature was the South Korean literati Han Kang-e. In 2000, South Korean President Kim Dae Jung was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. At a time when South Korean movies and TV serials are gaining popularity all over the world, the Nobel Prize for literature has also been awarded to that country.
In 2016, Hong Kong’s novel The Vegetarian won the Booker Prize. There are criticisms that the Nobel Prize for literature is given only to North American and European writers… especially to men. So far, 110 Nobel laureates in literature have been awarded… only 17 of them are women. It can be said that the committee has given this year’s literature Nobel for these criticisms. The Nobel Prizes in all categories will be awarded on December 10, 2024. The prize, which is named after Alfid Nobel, the Swedish scientist who discovered dynamite, carries a cash prize of $1 million. The Nobel Foundation of Stockholm, Sweden presents these awards.
